World Garden Network champions grass roots community garden projects sowing the seeds of change, tackling the nature crisis, loneliness and food insecurity. Our aim is to maximise the visibility of community garden projects and facilitate easier funding opportunities for individuals and businesses looking to support local community gardening initiatives.

Community gardens are not just about growing plants; they are instrumental in addressing critical issues.

Tackling Food Insecurity

By 2050, the world’s population will reach 9 billion, with two-thirds living in cities. By 2050 we will need to produce 60% more food to feed a world population of 9.3 billion. Land-competition from urbanisation means that agricultural land is shrinking and the need for urban food production is growing.

Reversing the Nature Crisis

Community gardens provide vital habitats for nature and help to reduce atmospheric carbon. To tackle the nature crisis, it’s essential that we invest in community gardening initiatives. The rapid loss of biodiversity is a global issue, particularly pressing for urban areas where most people live. This challenge requires a united effort, as highlighted by the IPCC, which emphasises the necessity of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieving complete reduction by 2050 to mitigate the severe effects of climate change.

In addition to the environmental benefits, community gardens provide a place for people to connect, learn and enjoy physical activities.

Supporting Wellbeing

Loneliness is a growing concern, with nearly half of adults in the UK reporting feelings of isolation, and a significant portion experiencing chronic loneliness. Engaging in community gardening can provide a remedy, as studies show that spending time in nature can lower heart rates and blood pressure, fostering a sense of connection among individuals.

To thrive, community garden initiatives require better visibility, a steady influx of volunteers, and access to funding, all of which are vital for their sustainability and impact.

World Garden Network is a social enterprise on a mission to help nature’s recovery by connecting communities through gardening.
